Saved and inhabited

Castle Twickel is located in the center of the estate. The origin of the house and its inhabitants dates back as far as 1347. In that year, Herman van Twickelo bought the 'House to Eysinc', which quickly got renamed to Twickel.

Twickel was never sold: it passed from father to son or daughter. The last owner, Marie, baroness of Heeckeren and Wassenaer, put the country estate into the hands of the Twickel Foundation in 1953. According to her wishes, the castle is still inhabited to this day.

The Ootmarsum open air museum will take you to the Twente of the past. In a park-like environment 18 buildings, each with its own inventory and story, and many utilitarian objects will give you a fascinating image of life in the countryside of Twente about 100 years ago. The museum also tells the tale of the "Heeren", the governors of the past, the commander, the Drost and the Hofmeier.

Horse market Enter, Wierden; well-attended equine event!

Horse market Enter. Every year the yearly pony and horse market is held in the town center of Enter. On and around the town market the horses and ponies can be seen from an early hour. The smell of horse dropping is very strong then, and you can feel the horses snorting and stamping their hooves really well. The horse market in Enter is accompanied by a very large goods market/fair, an atmospheric flea market and many attractions for children.

The zompen

The zomp is a 12 meters long oak flatboat with foresail and mainsail. A fantastic sailing boat, easy to steer and very suited for shallow water.

If you want to eat out, you should check out restaurant Loetje in Gorssel.  Loetje is a restaurant chain known for their great steak. It is really worth a try!

As the name reveals, forest restaurant Joppe is situated in a beautifully wooded area between Zutphen, Deventer and the Gorsselse Heide. You can enjoy lunch or diner at the restaurant.
